S-Pedelecs: Fast, faster, driving license required!
Welcome to our blog, dear e-bike fans! Today we're taking a look at the exciting world of S-Pedelecs and explaining why it sometimes takes more than just leg muscles to control these speedy bikes. And to top it all off, there's a little anecdote from the courtroom that's sure to make you smile.
The story of Mr. Schnell and his S-Pedelec
Imagine having a lightning-fast S-Pedelec that can reach an impressive 45 km/h. Mr. Schnell, a 38-year-old man from Neubrandenburg, also thought that was great – until the legal aftermath came.
What happened?
Mr. Schnell, who already had a wide range of previous convictions, including some drunk driving, took his S-Pedelec for a little ride one evening. But instead of a relaxing ride, the trip ended with a hefty fine: 90 daily rates of 20 euros each, a total of 1,800 euros. Why? Mr. Schnell did not have a valid driver's license, which is required to drive an S-Pedelec. A bit much, of course, but the good man had a few other things on his record as well.
When do you need a driving license for e-bikes?
Not every e-bike is the same. Here is a quick overview of when you are on the safe side:
- Normal e-bikes (up to 25 km/h): No driving license required.
- S-Pedelecs (up to 45 km/h): Driving license required, as these are considered small motorcycles and require an insurance license plate.
What does the law say?
Judge Iris Hagedorn sums it up: “Every e-bike that requires an insurance license plate also requires a driving license in traffic.” This means that you should definitely find out about the legal requirements before you take your first ride with a new S-Pedelec.
Conclusion: Drive fast, punish quickly
Mr. Schnell's story is an instructive example of how important it is to know and follow the laws. If you are unsure about which regulations apply to your e-bike, you should find out more before your first ride or ask us directly in the shop.
